Independent Reading
Reading is undoubtedly the most important skill we must practice in order to strengthen our ability to think, question, understand, develop an advanced vocabulary, and quite honestly, to be prepared for the world. Bearing this in mind, this year we will be reading. A lot. One of, if not the, most important requirements of our class will be your self-selected independent reading.
Requirements:
1. You must have an independent reading book at all times. This means, once you finish a book, you’ll need to have your next selection ready to go.
2. Occasionally, you will be asked to select a book within a particular genre, such as realistic fiction or nonfiction.
3. You will need to read materials other than your independent reading books, such as newspaper, magazine, and internet articles. We’ll create a list of popular resources in class.
4. You will be expected to read self-selected books and articles for a minimum of TWO HOURS EACH WEEK. This is in addition to our regular class reading assignments. You will keep track of your progress by keeping a reading log.
5. Remember: Read as much as you can, as often as you can!
